It's ok to make it about YOU too

From the start of a family's autism journey whether that be noticing symptoms, seeking assessment (which in and of itself can be a mountain to climb), or choosing and attending all the therapies your child needs to thrive...the journey is all about your child.

Most people would agree and say that's how it should be. And while I agree that focusing your energy on early intervention and implementing strategies to promote growth and independence are WONDERFUL, I also can acknowledge that there are often important people left in the shadows. This can include parents, caregivers and siblings.

A diagnosis of any kind represents a shift. A shift from what was expected to what is the current reality. An autism diagnosis could be a welcome confirmation of what you already knew or it could be a complete shock; however, in any circumstance it indicates a shift in your priorities and your family dynamic. The number one comment I hear from families is some version of "I feel alone in this".

Pouring all of your money, time and resources into your special needs child is noble, but I encourage you to also step back and prioritize yourself, your marriage (or other relationships) and your child's siblings. Did you know that in special needs families divorce rates are nearly 80%? This is a large increase from the already average 50% rate for neurotypical families. Family members affected by autism can all process emotions in unique ways and might benefit from various supports.

This can include

  • Parent/Sibling support groups - gathering with people walking similar paths

  • Play therapy for siblings to safely and effectively process their emotions

  • Individual counseling to check in with yourself and create healthy coping strategies for stress

  • Marriage counseling to remain connected to your partner and unified in your family structure

  • Attending inclusive local events

I encourage you to join Facebook groups, follow local special needs community instagrams and websites, go out of your comfort zone and attend local events when you can, seek support for yourself and others in your family as well. You deserve to be as supported as your child is.
